Next Board Member Openings scheduled for October 2008
District 3,4, and 7 see maps below:



There will be three vacant positions for Board Members effective October 1,
2008. Of these three positions one must be an LCSW, one an LGSW and one an LBSW.
There must also be at least one minority representative in this group. The board
will accept letters for nominations from June 1, 2008 until September 1, 2008.
The top three names (people with the most letters) for each district will be
sent to the Governor's Office for Board appointment consideration. The nominations must be made by a licensed social worker living within the
district of the person they are nominating. The letters must have the licensee's
name, license number and mailing address of the person making the nomination.
Letters received without this information cannot be accepted. Please
mail your nomination letter to:

The Public Hearing took place October 26, 2007 here in Montgomery at 10:30 AM in the RSA Union Building at 100 North Union Street, Suite 300, Montgomery AL. Discussion on proposed changes to the Administrative Code (Rules) for the Board of Social Work Examiners occurred.
850-X-2 passed
850-X-5 did not pass and another meeting to discuss the
changes has been
scheduled March 28, 2008. Notice of the proposed changes were sent with the
Newsletter the week of January 7-11, 2008
To view the changes to the 850-X-2 go to Laws & Rules on our web page and view the Administrative Code, this sections is titled Definitions. This change went into effect December 12, 2007.

The Public Hearing that took place on February 23, 2007 produced the following results:

The above changes went into effect April 12, 2007. A new Administrative Code will be printed after the next Public Hearing. When the Codes are available one will be sent to all licensees, in the meantime the changes have been updated on the Administrative Code which can be viewed from this web site under "Laws & Rules".

2009 Student Scholarship Award
Purpose of Award:
1. To raise the visibility of the Social Work profession in the area
of health care.
2. To honor and support an outstanding student who is committed to
pursuing a Social Work career in health care.
Description of Award:
1. The scholarship winner will receive a cash award, payable to your
school of choice, for $1,000 per semester. Second semester payment
contingent upon GPA of at least 3.0 in Social Work classes.
2. All applicants will receive a one year membership in ASHCSW.
Eligibility:
The award is open to any student in/from Alabama who:
1. Is a Junior/Senior or graduate student in the pursuit of a BSW/MSW
degree.
2. Attends an accredited School of Social Work.
3. Will be enrolled as a student in January 2009.
4. Shows a commitment to a career in health care Social Work.
Application Process:
1. Applications will be due by September 15, 2008.
2. Applicants are requested to apply by submitting three (3) copies of
each of the following:
a. A brief cover letter with name, address, telephone
and email address.
b. Three letters of reference including:
One academic recommendation
One fieldwork recommendation
One recommendation from an
employment or volunteer experience
c. A resume outlining volunteer, practicum, and paid
work experience.
d. A personal statement, not to exceed 500 words,
describing an aspect of Social Work practice in health care in which the
student is interested, explaining what the student believes to be his/her
potential to make a unique contribution in that area of practice.
3. Additional application materials will not be accepted.
4. The ASHCSW Student Award Committee will review all applications.
Candidates will be notified of the Committee's decision by October 15, 2008.
5. The recipient of the award will be recognized at the Fall Conference
2008, and may be asked to attend the conference to receive the award.
